Young Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm Casting Announcement

It has been confirmed by director Bryan Singer that the young version of Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Storm have been officially cast for X-men: Apocalypse. Tye Sheridan (from the film ‘Mud’) will be Cyclops, while ‘Game of Thrones’ star Sophie Turner will be playing Jean Grey. The weather controlling mutant known as Storm will be played by Alexandra Shipp.

Now I’ll be honest, I know absolutely nothing about any of these 3 people. But judging off of what they’re coming from, these seem like very experienced young actors. I’m personally very happy that they went with actors who aren’t TOO well known. These are the perfect characters to make these newcomers shine and become famous.

At least that’s what I hope for. And what I mean by that is simply this: These characters were handled HORRIBLY in the original X-Men trilogy. Cyclops, who was originally played by James Marsden is one of the biggest character disappointments of recent memory in my opinion. It seemed that for each movie he was given less and less to do. The first film he was pretty prominent, but served very little purpose to the events that transpired. The second movie, he disappears for 70% of the movie. I did feel that the ending of X2 set his character up to be very important for X3. Marsden’s performance in the final act of X2 was excellent and I really wanted to see the conflict that him and Wolverine would have in X3. But then, they decided to kill Cyclops off in the opening act of X3. HUH?!?!

Why is this such a big deal? Because in the comics, Cyclops is the field leader of the X-men. He’s a character with a lot of depth and what 20th Century Fox decided to do with this character was just insulting. The same can be said (to some degree) for Jean Grey and Storm who were played by Famke Janssen and Halle Berry, respectively. I felt they had better execution than Cyclops did (and more screen time), but they still lacked a lot of the development that always ended up going to Wolverine.

Now, with the events of X-men: Days of Future Past and a new timeline set in motion, we now have a glorious opportunity to do things right this time.

I’m a huge X-men fan, and Days of Future Past was one of my favorite movies of 2014. I have a lot of faith in these new actors, but what I hope for the future of this franchise is that they give these popular mutants the characterizations they truly deserve!
