‘Indiana Jones 5’ Announced

Collider – Indiana Jones 5 Announced!

Well it’s happening. It’s finally happening!!!

“Indiana Jones will return to the big screen on July 19, 2019, for a fifth epic adventure in the blockbuster series. Steven Spielberg, who directed all four previous films, will helm the as-yet-untitled project with star Harrison Ford reprising his iconic role. Franchise veterans Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall will produce.

“Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019,” said Alan Horn, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. “It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”

Famed archaeologist and explorer Indiana Jones was introduced in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark – one of AFI’s 100 Greatest American Films of All Time – and later thrilled audiences in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, 1989’s Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The four films have brought in nearly $2 billion at the global box office.”

I’ve wanted a fifth Indy movie since…well… when the fourth one came out. This has been long rumored and I really felt that after I saw {Spoiler Warning} Han Solo get murdered in ‘The Force Awakens’, we would get an announcement of this not long after. I figured Harrison Ford would never be able to make this if he was involved with Star Wars for the next 6 years or so. But when Han died, that little messed up part of my brain said, “good, now he has time to make another Indy”.

Why do I love this news exactly the way it is?

Well for one, I love Indiana Jones. He’s an awesome character, and the movies are worth watching over and over again. Another thing though, is that even though I didn’t hate the fourth movie, I understand the overall disappointment with it. It was a rough comeback, and probably not the movie we deserved after a 20 year wait.

The news of Harrison Ford AND Speilberg returning is great because they get the chance to give us something a little more worthwhile. Again, I will actually defend ‘Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’. But I will still admit that it’s a film that could and should have been better. I think it’s a fine Indiana Jones movie that was simply made at the wrong time, and didn’t need George Lucas’s prequel-era mind set behind the wheel.

This reason alone is why I’m excited that Ford is coming back, because I want him to finish on the highest of notes before Disney decides to one day reboot this series. It’s inevitable, we all know it. And I think the world is ready again for a movie of this style. Crystal Skull came out the same year everything had to be “realistic” and “serious”.  If a movie between 2008-2012 had elements of cheese, it was laughed at and mocked. Thank you Christopher Nolan.

Lately however, movies ( Disney specifically) have been light-hearted and fun again, and audiences are accepting it with open arms. ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ had many elements of an Indiana Jones movie, and ‘The Force Awakens’ just proved this point even further.

I will be first in line to see this!
